CUBE says they are co-branding because "C-Cube inside" sells VCD's. ESS says their VCD chip is cheaper and will takeover 70% of market share for VCD's in Asia next year. Who is an investor to believe? I'm long on CUBE, waiting out not this quarter's earnings, but looking to the year 2000 where the MPEG-2 money comes in. But this VCD shoot-out has me troubled. Does anyone have information from Asia on how the VCD market is really going? Are mpeg-1 decoder chips strictly commodities there, or does the "C-Cube Inside" brand name really make a difference? This changes the long term picture, not only for the current VCD market, but for the MPEG-2 markets to come. CUBE has the talent, the technology and the headstart. But will margins dry up underneath them as the market grows due to commodity based competition?
