Steve, I have a bit of good news for you. I, too, was concerned about what would happen if Gore were indicted, because Gingrich and Strom Thurmond follow behind him in line. However, over the weekend I read something which reminded me that if Gore is made president because Clinton is impeached or resigns, he gets to appoint a new vice president. In fact, odds are being taken on just who that would be, believe it or not. Some people will bet on anything!!
I think Lieberman, the Senator who gave that speech criticizing Clinton, or Bob Kerrey of Nebraska would be potentially good vice presidents. There are several Democrats who are of such stature that they would be excellent for the job. And since I am concerned about the future of the Democratic party, it is hard for me to argue that this would be a BAD thing to happen. An incapacitated Clinton will bring down the party, and it will be a couple of years at the very least before it could recover.
