*** related news *** US WEST COMMUNICATIONS said late Friday companies that use the local phone network and Internet Protocol to complete long-distance phone calls will have to pay access charges just like all other companies providing long-distance phone service. Under existing federal regulatory rules, Internet access and other "enhanced" information services are exempt from the access charges that are mandatory for all interstate and intrastate long-distance telephone calls, the carrier said. BELLSOUTH also recently notified companies that provide long-distance phone service using Internet Protocol that it would begin charging them access charges for every call connected.
