Micron Electronics and 3Com Corporation Provide PC Industry's First Gigabit Ethernet Solution - BW, 06:01 a.m. Sep 15, 1998 Eastern -- Micron NetFRAME 6200 server is fully qualified with 3Com(R) Gigabit EtherLink(R) Server NIC -- NAMPA, Idaho--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 15, 1998--
Micron Electronics, Inc. (NASDAQ:MUEI), announced today that the Micron(tm) NetFRAME 6200(R) is the first full-featured server to be fully qualified and validated with 3Com's (NASDAQ:COMS) Gigabit EtherLink Server network interface card (NIC).
"Once again, Micron Electronics reinforces its commitment to provide industry-leading networking solutions to customers by partnering with the industry's most prominent providers of network technologies like 3Com," said Dean Klein, Micron Electronics executive vice president and chief technical officer. "Thanks to the Micron NetFRAME 6200 server configured with 3Com's Gigabit EtherLink Server NIC, networked business environments can be more efficient and can move programs, files and other data faster than ever before."
Gigabit Ethernet provides the scalability and performance necessary to meet the increasing demands on today's networks. This new backbone technology allows larger networks to exchange information approximately 10 times faster than the current standard Fast Ethernet, which runs at 100Mbps. Businesses networked with the NetFRAME 6200 can now take full advantage of bandwidth-intensive applications such as full-motion video, video conferencing and video editing.
"3Com's goal is to accelerate the growth of mission-critical PC servers," said Doug Spreng, senior vice president for 3Com's Client Access Business Unit. "Through the integration of the Gigabit EtherLink Server NIC and the Micron NetFRAME 6200 server, we are able to bring industry-leading speed to the PC server connection while delivering increased performance and availability into the unique server environment."
With the 3Com Gigabit EtherLink Server NIC, Micron provides the capacity to support high-end servers, delivering performance to the LAN while working with the LAN's existing infrastructure. Utilizing 32-bit bus mastering, this 64/32-bit NIC relieves server congestion, bringing greater bandwidth to high-end servers utilizing just one PCI slot, cable link and switch or hub port. An integral component of 3Com's end-to-end Gigabit Ethernet system, the Gigabit EtherLink Server NIC combines the benefits of the higher gigabit performance with the familiarity of Ethernet. The card is Fast IP-enabled. Fast IP is a DynamicAccess(R) software feature that enables the NIC to overcome routing bottlenecks and deliver end-to-end 1,000 Mbps performance.
The NetFRAME 6200 server, an extremely reliable, affordable high-end solution built on the latest Intel processor technology, is the newest addition to Micron's server line. The NetFRAME 6200 offers a flexible server solution for typical business applications that are the backbone of small and medium business computing solutions such as the Web Internet/Intranet, print/file, or groupware applications such as email and any of the Microsoft BackOffice suite of products. Starting at $7199, the NetFRAME 6200 server base configuration ships with single Intel Pentium II Xeon 400MHz processor (supports up to four), 9GB U2W LVDS SCA 1" Hard drive, 128MB ECC EDO DRAM, Microsoft(R) Windows NT(R) Server 4.0 SP3 (10 user license) and NOS Support (3 incident resolutions/1st year, 24x7).
Micron customers can reap the benefits of the direct business model by efficiencies gained through the company's build-to-order structure, which permits lower pricing, quicker delivery of new technology and a strong customer service and support relationship. Micron Electronics accepts orders over the Internet (www.micronpc.com)or by phone (1-800-209-9686).
Another aspect of Micron's relationship with 3Com is its active participation in the 3Com Connected(tm) program. As a partner in the 3Com Connected program, Micron pre-installs and pre-configures its desktops, laptops and servers with 3Com network hardware. Micron's NetFrame 6200, pre-installed with a 3Com Gigabit EtherLink Server NIC is another example of Micron's 3Com Connected systems that arrive ready to connect to a customer's network, right out of the box.
