DELL cuts prices for Workstations, the day after INTEL announced 29% price reductions on its chips.

austin360.com

The world's largest maker of computer chips on Monday said it was slashing prices by up to 29 percent on its Pentium 2 microprocessors, which are the brains in PCs typically costing from $1,500 to $2,000.

While Intel routinely cuts prices, the spotlight has been on the sparest machines. Intel early this year started selling basic microprocessors as the brains in these computers to compete with rival chip makers AMD and National Semiconductor. These machines, good for word processing, spreadsheets and other common computer uses, now cost from $400 to $1,000 each.

But Monday's price cuts are likely to push down prices of the next tier of machines, where prices now start at $1,500, to as little as $1,200. Intel's sharpest price cut of 29 percent, for example, lowers the price of Pentium 2 chips running at 350-megahertz to $299 from $423.
