Nortel (Northern Telecom) First in World to Provided Four-Fiber Rings on 10 Gbps Network Solution
ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Nortel (Northern Telecom) (NYSE: NT, Toronto: NTL), the world's leading supplier of high-capacity optical networking systems, has delivered another technology breakthrough by supplying bi-directional four-fiber rings for 10 Gbps networks. Nortel four- fiber rings operating at 10 Gbps have been placed into commercial service and further implementation of this powerful solution, which provides the best reliability available in the industry today, are anticipated throughout major networks in 1998 and beyond. The application, believed to be the first such demonstration of four-fiber BLSR on a 10 Gbps platform with 32-wavelength Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (D-WDM), is being demonstrated here at the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (NFOEC), which continues until September 17 (Nortel booth No.453).

Nortel's four-fiber rings ride on the optical layer of the network and provide operational simplicity, self-restoration capability in milliseconds, and sophisticated bandwidth management for least cost per bit operation. Along with OC-192/D-WDM market leadership, Nortel is the leader in bi-directional line switched rings (BLSR), a proven and highly cost-effective technology that is supporting the national backbones of the new millennium.
Nortel already provides the highest capacity per fiber for optical networks of up to 160 Gbps using Dense-Wavelength Division Multiplexing (D-WDM), and has now doubled that capacity by providing 32 wavelength capability before year end. A number of service providers are preparing to close large SONET BLSR rings to take advantage of Nortel's total network capacity benefits. Nortel's Integrated Network Management gives those service providers the additional advantage of end-to-end network management not attainable in hybrid networks.
