Metro One Provides Powerful Search Engine for Newest Version of the Ameritech Internet Yellow Pages; db-One Database Retrieval System Simplifies Internet/Intranet Searches

FAIRPORT, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 14, 1998--Metro One Telecommunications, (NASDAQ: MTON) a leading developer and provider of Enhanced Directory Assistance services for the telco industry, announced today the signing of an agreement with Ameritech Interactive Media Inc. (AIM).

Under the terms of the agreement, Metro One will continue to supply infrastructure services for the newest version of the Ameritech Internet Yellow Pages service. Metro One's full text retrieval system, db-One, running on Sun Solaris, has provided Ameritech Internet Yellow Pages (http://yp.ameritech.net) with a fast, easy-to-use search engine that has helped position it as one of the top Internet Yellow Pages sites.

The db-One system consists of three main components: the db-One authoring system for indexing and compressing data, the db-One search engine that supports Boolean logic, phonetic and wildcard searches, and the db-One server.

"The Ameritech Internet Yellow Pages is an Internet-based directory that provides Internet users with helpful shopping information while promoting the businesses of local merchants," said Paul Manns, director of product development at AIM. "Metro One has proven they provide a powerful information resource that is complete and easy to use, and we are pleased to be continuing our relationship with them."

Ameritech has also licensed Metro One's proprietary Business Category Thesaurus (BCT). BCT links more than 41,000 common terms and brand names to its database of over 21,000 Yellow Page categories and Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes. For example users can quickly locate a business by either using a name or keyword, such as "Schlage" or "deadbolt" as well as by the official Yellow Page heading of "Locks and Locksmiths".

"Our database division is focused on the creation of advanced information retrieval systems," said Mike McCourt, vice president, Database Software Division at Metro One. "Our full text search engine is ideally suited for sorting through the volumes of structured information that companies are posting on their Internet sites. db-One is easy to install and use, is highly scalable, and meets the ever expanding needs of rapid information access."
