09/15 12:26 Viagra could be available in Belgium within 90 days

BRUSSELS, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Viagra, Pfizer Inc's <PFE.N> blockbuster
impotency drug, should be available in Belgium within 90 days, possibly much
sooner, an official at the economics affairs ministry said on Tuesday.

The European Union earlier on Tuesday gave its blessing to the drug that treats
male impotency, saying it could now be prescribed in its 15 member countries.

A spokeswoman at Belgium's economics affairs ministry, which regulates drug
prices, said the ministry is required to rule on a company price request within 90
days from the drug winning EU approval. But she said the ministry was likely to
act more quickly than that.

The introduction of Viagra in Belgium is contingent on the drug maker
submitting a pricing request to the ministry, the spokeswoman said.

No one at Pfizer was available to confirm whether the company had already
submitted such a request.

If the ministry fails to respond within 90 days to a company's request, the price
sought by the company is automatically granted, the spokeswoman said.

A decision on whether the government will authorise reimbursement on Viagra
would be made separately by the ministry of social services. Pfizer could submit
requests simultaneously to the two ministries, but a decision on reimbursement is
contingent on the price set, the spokeswoman said.

France, Germany, Italy and Denmark have already said that they will not offer
state reimbursement on Viagra while the British government has asked doctors
not to prescribe it for the time being.
