If Congress chooses to slap down a democratic election, there are other polls numbers that will suffer dramatic downturns. In 1976 after Nixon left office when asked about whether they viewed Congress positively, only 11% could respond yes. Asked about the Presidency only 9% could say yes.

Such a low numbers are probably worst than existed in continental Europe (had there been polls) when the population turned toward fascism and the Nazi in Germany. This was a time when parliaments were also viewed with disgust.

Many think that a radical turn in politics can result if the absence electorate is suddenly awakened. This "hole" in the American electorate is sometimes referred to as "American Exceptionalism". A constitutional crisis may fill this hole so that they vote in numbers typical of an European Election (85% and up) as they pour into the polling places. And whom they decide to vote for could be very non-traditional candidates.

The loser in this could be all our democratic institutions, or possibly its rebirth.
