I don't want to be argumentative either, but I didn't know there was a rule on minimum level of knowledge of an industry.

Your answer in the next paragraph was probably helfpul for him, and saved him a lot of time. Hopefully you've received similar benefit from people who have talked to IR departments, poured over financials, and done competitive analyses and then have provided their findings on SI boards.

Seems like this kind of activity is what makes SI a great community.
