Michael, that was from 1996. I can't see the point of it and the information is a bit dated.

America's [actually, Qualcomm's] CDMA is not challenging GSM. It has won! The only argument remaining is how much L M Ericsson and others have to pay for the right to use Qualcomm's Intellectual Property in cdma2000, the third generation CDMA system which all seem to be keen on.

The idea that cdmaOne is the equivalent of Betamax has shown the importance of understanding the detail rather than making a rough analogy. It turns out that cdmaOne will be the VHS. Well, that's a rough analogy too - it will be cdma2000.
