<Clearly at these valuations the market doesn't believe in the merged entity's ability to deliver short term.>

I would agree with this statement. Not that I felt the firms individually could deliver either, but the merger will impact them while they get the sales orgs together.

I started shorting HYSL the day of the merger. I expect to see it decline another $5 or so near term. No real rebound in sight.

And no, HYSL is not an analytical gorilla. I can't stand the term OLAP. Didn't like the term Data Warehouse either. Sure didn't help Informix or Sybase much. Just marketing as far as I am concerned.

All the major package vendors would much prefer to do their own analytical processing. The alliances HYSL has sound great, but they certainly aren't the preferred option for any of their partners, long term.

Arbor as a data repository isn't going to emerge as a replacement for DB2 and Oracle. IBM and Oracle spend more in R&D than HYSL grosses. Pretty tough to compete in the data storage business.

An aside, I haven't seen any shops testing their Hyperion or Arbor applications for Y2K compliance. Given the number of Hyperion users that rely on it for production of their financial results you'd think they would be more concerned about this. Delays in producing financial results typically have consequences. Inaccuracies even more so, e.g. Cendant.
