Microsoft and 3D:

Here's what I think would happen if Microsoft came out with a 3D card:

1) D3D would start to look more like a proprietary API. MS would add features to their card at the same time they add to the API. (I've read that this was happening with their Talisman project. To be more precise, I read that Talisman and D3D development were assigned to the same or closely related teams.)

2) MS games would support MS hardware and special API functions.

3a) The gaming industry would rebel/piss itself with fear, and support OpenGL and Glide.

and/or

3b) MS would get the pants sued off it for multiple antitrust violations.

Of course it's (3b) preventing MS from trying this. I don't think (3a) would scare them as much as it should.
