From local (Vion) paper: New Haven Register Wed., Sept. 16, 1998 Vion closer to testing cancer fighter Wayne E. Travers Jr. NEW HAVEN - Vion Pharmaceuticals Inc., which provides products and technology for treating cancer and viral diseases, said Tuesday it now has the capacity to produce enough of a cancer-fighting bacterium to move the company closer to human testing. The genetically engineered bacterium, known as VNP20009, is a variant of the salmonella bacterium, which normally causes food poisoning. The modified strain carries a therapeutic protein into cancer cells. It is expected to be ready for U.S. Food and Drug Administration-mandated Phase I testing on humans in early 1999, said Thomas Mizelle, Vion vice president of operations. VNP20009 is part of Vion's TAPET technology, which involves the use of bacteria as carriers of proteins designed to attack cancer cells while limiting toxic effects on normal tissue. "This achievement is an important milestone for Vion," said the company's Chief Executive Officer, John Spear. He said Tuesday's announcement shows the development and testing of TAPET technology is proceeding as scheduled. The company's stock trades on the Nasdaq exchange under the VION symbol. It closed Tuesday at $3.37, up 13 cents.
