>The greatness of America has little to do with the petty minded religiosity which surfaces from time to time, and a great deal to do with our adherence to our Constitution and founding ideals.<

The greatness of America has little to do with the currently reigning American quasi-nihilism, and a great deal to do with our adherence to the ideals of common decency and respect for our fellow man. "America is great, because America is good."

>As well as our respect for diversity, and allowance of the most effective, regardless of their cultural or religious values, to rise.<

And this respect was informed by unfettered religion.

>Prohibition was born of the same sorts of moral prescriptions.<

At their core, prohibition was born of the same sort of moral prescriptions (run amok) that currently prohibits the use of certain controlled substances.

>The civil rights movement was born of adherence to the Constitution and our founding ideals.<

We must remember our Founding Fathers excluded blacks and women from the American brotherhood, in the case of Blacks even enslaving them. It was moral decency, informed by religion, Christianity in particular, that began the civil rights movement, and if you deny this, I will prove you false. Though I am not here specifically to be an apologist for religion, I must give credit where it is due.
