Chrysalis-ITS announces Luna(tm)CA is now Entrust-Ready(tm)
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS--Entrust Fall Seminar Series '98--Entrust(r) customers offered additional hardware security & backup with the Chrysalis-ITS LunaCA Key Protection System.
Chrysalis-ITS Inc., today announced that its leading LunaCA key protection system has received Entrust-Ready(tm) branding from Entrust Technologies Inc. Financial institutions & corporations implementing and deploying Entrust/PKI(tm) 4.0 can now add the Chrysalis-ITS LunaCA hardware security system to protect and back up the root keys used to sign certificates, enhancing the security of their Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).
The foundation of an organization's PKI security is based on the secure generation, backup and storage of the CA (Certificate Authority) root key. If this key is compromised, every certificate issued using that root key is also compromised. For a digital certificate to be trusted, you must trust the signature of the CA who issued it and who's signature attests to the validity of the certificate. To assure trust, the CA must have the ability to securely generate a signing key, to securely sign and certify the public key of the client and to issue the digital certificate.
Chrysalis-ITS' LunaCA system offers Entrust users the highest level of assurance in hardware to protect the CA's root key. LunaCA, the leading cryptographic hardware device for root key protection, is now Entrust-Ready(tm) and interoperates with the Entrust/PKI. The system ensures that the root signing keys are generated, stored and backed up securely on the LunaCA system mitigating the risk of jeopardizing or destroying the key. LunaCA has completed independent formal testing to Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS)140-1 Level 3 with the validation certificate pending issuance from CSE and NIST.
"When additional levels of performance and protection are required for certificate issuance, our customers now have the option of implementing a hardware solution," said Brian O'Higgins, executive vice-president and CTO, Entrust Technologies Inc. "Entrust and Chrysalis-ITS have had a long partnership history and we are very pleased about the integration of LunaCA with our PKI technology."
Entrust/PKI release 4.0 is a security solution that provides a PKI for secure electronic commerce, desktop applications, Internet commerce, and more. A core product within the Entrust/PKI is the Entrust/Authority which provides automated key and certificate management for the Entrust infrastructure. Acting as the CA, Entrust/Authority issues all X.509 public-key certificates, and performs key and certificate management functions. The main functions of Entrust/Authority include creating certificates for all public keys. creating and backing up encryption key pairs for users and enforcing an organization's security policies.
LunaCA is a cryptographic hardware security system that complements the Entrust/Authority 4.0 security kernel. It offloads all cryptographic processing related to the root signing key including certificate signing, key generation, and archiving from the host computer or server. With LunaCA, the encryption algorithm or root keys are not directly addressed by the CA host server where they would be vulnerable to outside intruders, viruses, inadvertent erasing, and complications from system failures.
LunaCA provides a unique key cloning feature which allows critical keying material to be securely replicated to provide secure backup and archiving of the root signing key(s). Using this unique cloning feature, Entrust/Authority managers can ensure that their sensitive keying material is both protected and available in case of disaster or failure. LunaCA also provides trusted path access control and key-splitting features to guard against operational risks. With LunaCA the Entrust Public-Key Infrastructure has a higher level of assurance and reliability.
"Providing highly secure and scaleable PKIs is vital to the growth of electronic commerce and virtual private networking," said Steven Baker, President & CEO Chrysalis-ITS. "With the integration of LunaCA and Entrust/Authority, customers receive the most safety, reliability and scalability they need to build CA systems vital to the future of their organizations."
As the use of CA systems increases and more and more enterprises deploy PKIs, the requirements for increased security and performance will also increase. Chrysalis-ITS is addressing these needs by developing the cryptographic hardware used by award winning complete PKI solution vendors like Entrust Technologies Inc.
