Republicans had been quite worried about their prospects this election. They had no issues with traction that they were pushing.

HMO reform. Tobacco legislation. Fixing social security. All Clinton initiatives, all things the public was very interested in, all things the Republicans were avoiding like the plague. Even educational reform, while not something Clinton yet had much on the table about, was clearly an area of great public interest, and a better issue for Clinton than the Republicans.

This scandal is a godsend for the Republicans. Well, actually, its origins are a bit closer to earth. It's the fruits of the zealous efforts of some of their more extreme partisans for years. The right wing funded and directed Paula Jones suit brought home the bacon big time. The saw the President's weakness, and they figured out how to go after that normally off limits subject, and make it mainstream media fodder, big time. Use the inquisitional freedom to bring in everything that a sexual harassment lawsuit affords. (Unfortunately. Let's change that for all of us.)
