Ted: Report on CNBC news about a study "proving" Gulf War Syndrome is another example of sloppy journalism. It does nothing of the sort. Of course Gulf War veterans have more subjective symptoms than the norm...the questions have face validity and the examinee obviously knows why he is being asked the questions.

Numerous multicenter studies in fact have refuted Gulf War Syndrome and there are no biological markers or epidemiologic pattern to the disease. In fairness,I have to credit Geraldo who is probably my least favorite journalist, when he raised eyebrows last week when a lawyer tried to make a case for a lawsuit against weapons manufacturers without any proof.

I release that CNBC gets higher ratings by confirming mass hysteria than objectively refuting it, but is it too much to ask that news organizations stop contributing to junk science? Witness the breast implant lawsuit...no proof at all of any connection to connective tissue disease, yet billions of dollars later news organizations are just starting to look skeptically at the data.

Maybe it's too much to ask that news organizations understand statistics and the scientific method. Would it be too much to ask if they would just run it by Joe Kernan?

BTW, the moment they find a biological marker or prove an epidemic, I'll be the first to support compensation to the veterans.
