Thank you for the backhanded compliment. Returning the favor, of all the Clinton threads on SI, I think this is the most substantive.

I think the anti-Clinton camp has to get back to reality though. Clinton will not resign and there is no way to get a 2/3rds vote of the Senate to impeach. The Republicans like the hideous Delay are trying to move to cut off any other avenue out of this showdown, such as censure. Why destroy the one viable exit strategy? Are Republicans really ready to go to battle with the President? The public does not want it (CBS NYTimes poll says 58% don't believe there should be an impeachment hearing.) It is apparent that the President has already hit bottom on this scandal and he's only going to get stronger over the next 6 months. The Republicans may score some strong midterm election results, but not enough to make the impeachment a foregone conclusion. IMO, this reminds me of the govt shutdown-budget showdown. Republicans were SURE that they were right in saying that the President was to blame for the govt shutdown -- and they were -- but Clinton somehow came out of that crisis smelling like a rose. I always waited for the backlash to hit Clinton, but it never did. On the other hand, it floored Newt Gingrich, and he is basically a shell of the man that he was when he first took the Speakers' seat. There WILL be a bloodbath this Spring--but the blood running in the streets with be true-blue Republican.

Doughboy.
