Nixon's crime was not only a crime by a very HIGH Misdemeanor. Meaning, to have engaged in a conspiracy to subvert the election process by conducting illegal espionage on the other party's campaign strategy, and to have used misused major instrumentalities of government, including not only a substantial portion of his White House staff, quite explicitly and covertly, but also the FBI, IRS, and CIA to illegally damage his enemies, were very High Crimes and very High Misdemeanors (misuses of office) indeed. Very far up there. The only delay on axing Nixon was definite proof that he was involved, rather than merely an ever widening of his supposedly waywardly acting lieutenants. Once that proof was in, he resigned within days. There might have been a unanimous Senate vote. This is a hugely different level of gravity. Doug
