George,

Aberdeen Group is an industry research group that makes most of their money from companies like Novell to do research on their products and - for additional fees - go to briefings, speaking engagements, or whatever the company wants to do with the published reports.

I have had dinner with the author and main speaker of many of the Aberdeen released Novell research output last June. He is Mr. Sakakeen (I may have his spelling wrong).

The data is researched and I would think accurate. But its purpose is to show to the industry a logical set of reasons why products from the paying Aberdeen client are viable, to prove that the client and its products are "in the game", and to show statistics or survey results that indicate the industry's impression of the client and its products.

That is what they are known for in the industry. It does serve a purpose and provide factual information. But one must keep in mind that the client is paying for their researched results so the outputs that get released by the client may be a bit biased.

Many industry players use them to do this research. Novell is just one of many.

These are MHO folks!
