Is there a difference between someone who had one affair many years ago, stopped the behavior and is not on the straight and narrow, and the person who has a series of affairs stretching back 20 years and still continuing to this day?

That may or may not accurately describe the Hyde, et al vs Clinton scenario to you, but many people think it does. Just make the assumption that it does for the sake of this discussion - I would have no problem forgiving and forgetting in the first instance, but would have far more problem with a person that has shown that it wasn't just a mistake brought on by problems at the time, but a pattern of behavior and thought.

This is like the Nixon vs Clinton comparisons - they both tried a cover up, but the situations are in no way comparable.

Even if you are correct, it doesn't excuse Clinton's behavior or resolve the current dilemma. If Clinton can no longer function as President because he has lost the trust of people around the world, or because the military will start questioning his orders, or (fill in the blank), then he should either resign or be impeached. If he CAN continue to function either because the people have forgiven him or think nothing wrong was done, then he should remain as President. All the rest of the discussion regarding sex being private or Starr being a turkey, or Hyde having an affair are completely irrelevant. They do not affect Clinton's ability to function as President.
