32 bit color is marketing hype. Its actually 24 bit color (with the upper 8 bits being unused, used for alpha, stencil, or other purpose). From a programming point of view, 32 bit is the easiest, and fastest way to access the frame buffer (since pixel boundaries correspond to individual memory addresses) and are even. 24 bit frame buffer are harder/slower since a mutliply * 3 (3 byte boundary) is required for each pixel.

In any event, whenver people talk about 32 bit color (frame buffer context), they usually mean 24. When texturing, the reference is to 24 bit + 8 bit alpha.
