John,

I received the following from Lajuanda Holder, Director of Investor Relations at CWEI, regarding the Paine Webber estimate of $1.70 for the year:

>>> I should have realized immediately why the PaineWebber numbers didn't add up to the CWEI actual number of $0.96 per share for nine months plus their 4th quarter estimates! PaineWebber backed out the non-cash charge from 2nd quarter ($1.2 million). All the analysts have backed that out. It was an impairment of property and equipment under the FAS No. 121. An explanation appears on page 9 of the June 30, 1996 Form 10Q filed by CWEI on August 8th.<<<<<

That $1.2 million would have amounted to about 0.17/share so if we take and subtract that from $1.70, that leaves $1.53 which is in line with the estimate of 0.56 + 0.96 = $1.52.

Look for CWEI to again have a big upside surprise--on a regular basis they have always beaten every estimate, including Hanifen's which has been the closest, by at least 25%. With the surge in oil prices this month, that just about puts the icing on the cake. BTW, Hanifen's estimate for the last quarter was 0.36; CWEI came in at 0.45--the street had a consensus of 0.29 if I remember correctly.
