Advanced Micro up on bullish comments at Merrill

Advanced Micro Devices shares rose 1
7/16 to 18 3/16 after Merrill Lynch
analysts Thomas Kurlak and Joseph Osha
raised their 1999 earnings estimates to 70
cents a share from break-even. The
analysts upped the estimates for the
chipmaker (AMD) citing stronger sales of
the K-6-2 chip, added demand at
Hewlett-Packard (HWP), higher average
prices on microprocessors, and AMD
gaining market share with 30 percent
sequential unit growth in the third
quarter compared to 10 percent at Intel
(INTC). Intel fell 1 11/16 to 83 3/8.
