Ann,

It's not so much balance as utter dismay. None of the characters in this drama--Clinton, Starr, Lewinsky, Tripp, Gingrich, Hyde--deserve our support. They are all standing on ethical quicksand. They--along with my colleagues in the press--are willing to drag this country's political culture even deeper into Jerry Springerland than it already is.They advance their selfish personal agendas while the rest of the country and the world rot.

I heard on the radio last night that growing numbers of people with serious diseases forsake mainstream medicine for untested and ineffective herbal remedies because they think hospitals and HMOs are too expensive and impersonal. I also heard a story about how in some African countries up to 40 percent of medical workers and teachers are infected with the HIV virus. It all sounded so sad to me because those are problems that policy makers should and could try to remedy.
