Your post reminds me of the quip, "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how was your day?"

In reference to your doomsday scenario, Alan Greenspan's Berkeley speech indicates the U.S. won't let the pendulum swing so far it can't be brought back. Apart from the speech, it appears they're letting Japan do everything in its power to hang itself first.

In Morgan Stanley Dean Witter's morning call, their telecom equipment report says, "We are in the sweet spot of infrastructure spending in the United States. Any weakness in Lucent Technologies (LU - 76 3/8 ) or Northern Telecom (NT - 45 9/16) as a result of ALAs problems would be a buying opportunity, in Shah's opinion. 1998 has been a great year for U.S. infrastructure spending, but there could be lumpiness in the next 12 - 18 months."

Today Lucent is holding an analyst conference and I'll be watching for reports from that, as well.

Later --

Pat
