Good story. I just sent it to a friend and he responded:

Hey, Shawn
This story was used as an episode on "Homicide", right down to the
forensic convention. Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows played the
elderly couple.
The coroner who told the story was a regular on the show.
The only difference was (if I remember correctly, it was last
season) that the son had come to the building to stop what he
had started, but was somehow convinced that he was too late, and,
overcome with guilt, went to the roof and jumped, and yada yada .
She (I should have said coroness >:) ) told the story as true, and
I figured it probably was. They just changed the names, and the
detectives involved were, of course regulars.
