Sony projects 10M DVDs by yr 2000. They must not be counting PCs. My guess is by X'mas, just about all PCs above $750 will have DVDs. By March, I just don't see CD-ROMs around any more, other than inventory fire-sales. Even now one can buy 20X CD/2X DVD combo drives for $65. If I were to build a computer today, I definitely would not buy a CD-ROM drive at any price.

Anyway, the next DVD player is a PC with TV out video card.

Also last night saw big Blockbuster poster in one of their stores advertising $2.99 rental on DVD movies with '300 titles' in stock. DIVX is dead. DVDs will be the next format. By year 2000, I bet you VHS will be dead too. Only problem I see is people renting movies might scratch up the disc. Come to think of it, perhaps DIVX has got something there. Time will tell ....
