j_b,

You can't really believe that every politician in Wash. today does not stand with his finger in the air to see which way the wind is blowing on every issue.

The House & Senate will indeed implement Impeachment Proceedings, Censure, or neither depending on the feedback they receive from their constituents -- the entire reason for which they were elected: to represent the wishes of the majority of the people from their district or state.(This is the way it works practically, if not by the historical description)

As far as the whole ordeal being the fault of the American people, we completely disagree on that score. If the President is in fact impeached, I believe we will have a "patch" presidency in the foreseeable future. Impeachment along with investigation will become new political tools. This will cause constant partisan squabbling, and the more important business of the nation will remain undone.

We have no idea what the sins of most of our past Presidents might have been. It's only for the past half century that it's been somewhat possible to know the true characters behind their public faces. Many point out the human failings of even our most esteemed former Chief Execs such as Thos. Jefferson.(I agree with Ken Burns who asserted recently that Geo. Washington is the only past president who could be elected according to today's standards).

The major point is that even if the American people do make a mistake in an election it should only be reversed in the case of treason, murder or something equally as serious.(IF it is proven undeniably in court that Pres. Clinton did in fact commit perjury, this would qualify as an impeachable offense IMO)
