According to Joe Califano, the special counsel investigating Crane, the affair was illegal under Virginia statutory rape laws, that the girl and Crane had developed "cover stories" to hide the affair, and that it took Crane two depositions before he admitted the affair. I think it's fairly clear that he committed rape, obstructed justice and perjured himself--under the standards that we are applying to Clinton today. Luckily for Crane, he was investigated by an upstanding Democrat in Califano, who did not charge him with silly perjury and obstruction of justice claims. Hyde's statement was not just about sex--it was about reconciliation.
