What has held ADSL stocks down for so long has been that ALA seemed to be under
bidding all the other companies and winning all the contracts. This has caused the slow
relentless fall in WSTL which started with the ALA win of the big tuna of ADSL
contracts. Today in the news, what has unfolded is that Ascend is teaming up with ALA
to provide networking and high speed internet access (ADSL). Ascend is connected
with Aware and ADI's jointly developed ADSL chip. This news rocketed AWRE today
and might be enough to keep momentum in that issue tommorrow. All along there were
concerns that ALA had won the contract but didn't have the product and yet the believe
was that they would somehow develop it in-house. The fear for all the ADSL pure plays
was that ALA would shut them out. Now all that is getting re-thought (big surprise - to
anyone except those specialized in this area). Now it looks like they will provide the
product through Ascend which just won a big BEL contract and is now fully in the telco
equipment arena. Ah; the developments; they are so interesting to follow. Just as with
AMTX; it is once again becoming clear that the work done by the pure play ADSL
companies can't be duplicated in-house.
