Steve-
It occurred to me when I read Rick's words, that the flip side of this phenomena is mass hysteria, and that it may be governed by the laws of mob psychology. Whether group worship is a spiritually powerful event beyond the norm or merely a psychological trigger that arouses common emotions is unprovable. Again, it comes back not to the the event itself, but to the use of the combined energies. And certainly religion has demonstrated the many and varied directions this can take!
Which I guess would mean that the power isn't necessarily in the prayer but in the psychological group event triggered by the activity.
And that both exonerates and declaws religion.
Does that make any sense at all?
