Just wanted to add that the stock market as everyday folks see it does not entail the entire market. Manipulate the generals (IBM, DELL, MSFT) and you get positive sentiment that can move sectors. Quote services will usually list the DOW, the S&P and the Nasdaq indices. If these are positive, Joe Sixpack thinks that the stock market is great and all is well in the world. He resists selling off his mutual fund holdings and buys into the whole "buy and hold" fairy tale that Buffet has woven.

What is not seen are the issues that are not represented by the three major indices. The "peripheral" and Russell stocks been in a bear market but one would never know it just by looking at the Dow or the Nasdaq.
