For nearly a year she ignored the increasing pain and stiffness, until one morning she couldn't get her 10-month-old daughter out of her car seat. But when she sought help, Martin found that conventional drug treatments, which were supposed to reduce the debilitating swelling, were practically useless. Over the course of a decade, the disease got progressively worse. She couldn't sleep for more than an hour at a time, awakened by the pain from stiffening joints. Sometimes she couldn't even get out of bed or dress herself. Today, Martin is taking a new drug that has gotten her back on her feet and living normally again. "I've been feeling the best I've felt in years," she says. "I still have some stiffness, but it's nothing I can't tolerate."
