<<Remember that people will still buy into megahertz and clock speeds.
AMD will have to go back to that 'PR' rating again, and may even
have to go with a new name other than 'K6-whatever'. Otherwise,
consumers will be confused when they hear that two different K6
products with the same frequencies have different performance
characteristics.>>

What you are saying is essentially correct. The mass will buy based on the MHz, a tactic which Intel has implanted into the consumer mind.
That tactic can also be used against Intel. That is why CeleronA-333 which has a big die will never BLOW away K6-2-333. Most consumer can't tell the difference between CeleronA and K6-2. To them 128K cache is an unfamiliar term. The decision will come down to brand name or $/MHz. Of course there is an educated group that will buy the better performance system. This group is small. Even within this group they know that the 128K cache has the advantage but will not perform well in 3D compared to 3DNOW. In either case the winner will be the one that has the smaller die size and lowest packaging cost.

For AMD to release the Sharptooth they must make the K6-3 at a HIGHER SPEED grade than the K6-2. In that way the consumers will not be confused. If not than the K6-3 will eat into the sales of K6-2 and that is a losing proposition. If you look back you will see K6-2 killed the sales of K6. Thus AMD switched everything to K6-2. It is a good thing that AMD switched to K6-2 becasue now AMD has a competitive advantage and selling point to convince OEMs and consumers to buy AMD. That competitive advantage differentiates AMD K6-2 from Intel PII.
