Right you were, Dan: a ram problem indeed! Thanks to you, Sean, Zeuspaul, and Spots for all your help.
Made it over to Comp USA yesterday afternoon, and picked up a replacement 128 SDRAM (PNY brand, 16 Hyundai TFG-10 grade AA chips.) Put it in last night, and since then not even a hiccup, no matter what I throw at it. As you might imagine, I am ECSTATIC that the problems are solved. Frustrating that I didn't get it isolated earlier, but so pleasing that the main problems are completely solved.
I'll post a more complete writeup on the finished system shortly, complete with impressions and pitfalls. It certainly feels very, very snappy!
