"U.S Technology lead is under pressure"-From CMP Net

The challenge for the United States in the next century could come not from low-cost producers but from low-cost innovators," according to the Commerce report, titled The New Innovators: Global Patenting Trends in Five Sectors.
The review, released Sept. 11, looks at patent trends in five sectors: advanced materials, IT, automotive technology, health and express package transportation, and logistics. The United States has a "clear technological lead" in all five categories and isn't likely to relinquish its top ranking any time soon, the report found.
However, with technology cycle times shortening, especially in IT, competitors may be able to leapfrog generations of technologies. "The process of transitioning from imitator to innovator has been dramatically compressed," the study found.
The result has been a marked increase in the number of U.S. patents in IT granted to South Korea and Taiwan over the past decade. India, Ireland, and Israel are also emerging as global players in IT, the report said. |
