This is from the EE times. CUBE'S newly announced MPEG decoder would seem to be a good fit for this design
Does anyone know where SA will get the silicon from? What is the significance of dropping the ATM interface and using MPEG 2 Transport?
Pushing Pegasus
Time Warner orders 1 million set-top boxes

Anaheim, Calif. -- Time Warner Cable last week surprised the industry by unveiling a bullish plan to purchase 1 million units of advanced digital set-top boxes over the next three years.

Selected as suppliers for Time Warner Cable's project, called Pegasus, are Scientific-Atlanta Inc. (Norcross, Ga.), Pioneer New Media Technologies Inc. (Long Beach, Calif.) and Toshiba.

Scientific-Atlanta, whose Explorer 2000 design was chosen, serves as the prime contractor, supplying 500,000 digital devices; Pioneer and Toshiba will provide, respectively, 250,000 units based on the Scientific-Atlanta design.

Both Pioneer and Toshiba will produce Pegasus boxes using the same PowerTV operating system and PowerKey security system, in addition to the same chip set designed by Scientific-Atlanta.

Pegasus is far more advanced than competing digital set-top boxes that have now begun to become commercially available by companies such as General Instruments. Not only does it provide a real-time reverse interactivity, but it is also designed to support Internet access and full Web-browsing capability via TV set or PC.

Leveraging what it has learned from the Orlando trial, Time Warner decided to use MPEG-2 transport in the Pegasus box, dropping the ATM interface originally used in the Orlando set-top box.
