Hi David,
Agreed Conclave appears to do what I thought wasn't being done...multi-point to multi-point VPNs. Actually I was browsing around on Cylink's Web site and I discovered that they support a Multi-point to Multi-point VPN also.
Cylink's solution is different from Conclave's in that you can use a blend of several different components to achieve the same result. OTOH, Cylink provides hardware acceleration, multi-protocol support, multi-network support (ATM, Frame Relay...etc) and all sorts of other interesting enhancements.
Unfortunately, Cylink's web site leaves a lot to be desired in communicating this message. Which kinda sorta, illustrates the point I was making in my prior message about everyone forgetting that its business needs that need to be addressed by technology not vice-versa.
If you were an IT manager trying to evaluate different Infosec options for your LAN and you went to Cylink's site (after all they do Infosec for the Fed and S.W.I.F.T payment system) it would take you easily 2-3 hours of research before you understood what all this marvelous technology they are offering you does for you.
If I were in Cylink's management shoes, I would make it extremely easy for anyone to understand the kinds of business problems that are solved by my Infosec solutions, including detailed business cases, cost/benefit analyses, etc.
At least Conclave's site does a much better job of selling you a solution rather than a technology. Although, the site was less meaty on details than I would have liked.
Regards, Yomama
PS At the end of the day one has to wonder if the holy grail of the VPN is not something like:
A multi-protocol (IP, IPX, etc), multi-network (T1, Async, Sync, ATM, Frame Relay) system capable of providing authentication, encryption, transaction, certification, and non-repudiation support on a general level (ie not application specific) both across public networks (ie the Internet) and private networks (ie Leased line providers) both on a LAN to LAN (multi-point to multi-point) and user to LAN (point to multi-point) basis.
Ewwww...what a mouthful. Thoughts anyone? |
