PacBell has ADSL now but the pricing is pretty high and relative to cable service offered by TCI-@Home (1.5mbps) for much less it's ano-brainer. Installation about the same (159 vs 150) but the monthly for 384Kbs is $89 on PacBell and $39.95 for cable at almost 4 times the speed.

TCI is expanding the coverage area in increments. Not all phone numbers can use PacBell's ADSL - depends on the distance from the CO to the CP and the condition of the copper in between. Where I'm moving to in Alameda (about 2 miles or so from Ascend) ADSL will NOT work so evenif the economics and service speeds were similar it wouldn't matter - the aging copper plant and distance makes it a no-no even at the slowest speed offered. FWIW.
