Barry Goldwater's famous phrase, "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice", comes to mind.

I guess here it would be "extremism in the defense of absolutely no illegality (no matter how minor) by the President is no vice".

Goldwater's phrase, and the lack of balance in the man it revealed, was widely regarded as contributing to his defeat in his run for President. His landslide defeat.

Because the stakes involved in resorting to nuclear war in the defense of liberty were pretty awesome. It could become necessary but Americans sure wanted balance, and a proper reluctance.

The stakes involved in removing a twice elected President from office, by a Congress where the other party holds the majority, are also pretty high. (Nowhere near as high of course, but high.) A proper reluctance, and respect for the Constitional standards is called for. As were shown, for the most part, by the Democratically controlled Congress during the Watergate impeachment process.
