Bell Labs has great technical depth, but having worked there, I can tell you they cannot bring a product to market in a timely manner. The patent issue appeals to their management because it does bring in short term dollars, but it also slows down the industry as Lucent tries to change their culture to a "faster to market" product management strategy. If they go head to head with a Cisco and they only metric is getting the newest technology out the door, they don't stand a chance. They are trying to change the rules of the game, which is sensible, but Cisco is also very good at that. We shall see.
