Jerry,

Like you, I've only just sent in my application. But I did talk to several reps about various things including short share availability. I was told that short sale orders print in a special trading room in Boston, where they are quickly verified as to availability of shares by people. I'm spoiled in this regard by Datek, where not only is share availability checked instantaneously, but there are always shares to short. I've never had a order rejected for lack of shares. However under $5 dollar stocks are excluded from the pool like everywhere else.

In answer to my previous question in case anybody is wondering, they said that short sale orders are accepted for market open and market close orders. Getting a short sale fill in this circumstance depends on the uptick/downtick situation at the time of the execution.

Here's a comment on another thread from a new Brown client.
