Satellite television provider DirecTV Inc on Thursday said it
has begun service to its four millionth subscriber, placing its
service in one out of every 25 U.S. households with a TV set.
DirecTV, a unit of HUGHES ELECTRONICS CORP, launched the
service in 1994, and since that time has signed up over one
million subscribers a year. Year-to-date in 1998, subscribers
are up nearly 30 percent over 1997. The service has sold over
120 million pay-per-view movies and special events, broadcast
over 200,000 hours of professional and collegiate sporting
events, earned a customer satisfaction rating over 90 percent
and kept its monthly disconnects, or churn rate, at around 1%.
