Emulex "Superfly" Next Generation Fibre Channel Device Set is Licensed by Hitachi

COSTA MESA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 1998--Emulex Corp.
(Nasdaq:EMLX), an industry leader in fibre channel products and technology, Thursday
announced that Hitachi Ltd. has licensed the Emulex "Superfly" fibre channel device set
for use in several of the next generation RAID products to be offered by Hitachi Ltd.

The "Superfly" device set is the core of Emulex's LightPulse(TM) 7000 and 7000/E PCI
host bus adapters, which are available today. This architecture is designed to optimize full
duplex throughput, distance, and reliability for those large and diverse enterprise
applications requiring gigabit connectivity.

"We believe the new high performance LP7000/E PCI host bus adapter architecture will
provide significant advantages to our next generation RAID product," said Toshihiko
Tamiya, general manager, Data Storage & Retrieval Systems Division, Hitachi Ltd.

work with Emulex to incorporate their LightPulse fibre channel products."

Emulex's newest fibre channel-optimized ASIC architecture, "Superfly", was designed to
achieve significant increases in performance over earlier generation fibre channel
solutions available in the market today. The "Superfly" device architecture offers a broad
set of operating features including support for all classes of fibre channel services (1, 2, 3
and intermix) and all topologies (arbitrated loop, point-to-point and direct switch attach).
