You don't have to write all of it off this year. Not sure of new tax law.

In the past, you could write off $5,000, dollar for dollar. Housemate had a fit about it, initially, but when he saw the way I worked it to our advantage the next year, he did not complain.

Just think of loss and gain as pieces of paper floating around. Then you and your wife will not become so upset.
