DURHAM, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Buffalo Bisons won their
first Governor's Cup title in 41 years, defeating the Durham
Bulls, 3-1, in the fifth and deciding game of the International
League Championship Series. The Bisons, who last won the
title in 1957, had been a member of the disbanded American
Association from 1985 through last season. They also won the IL
championship in 1933 and 1936. Jacob Cruz had three hits and
two RBI and Jason Jacome (3-0) remained perfect in the
postseason to lift the Bisons, who won the first two games of
the series in Buffalo before dropping Games Three and Four. The
Bisons scored once in the first and then added two in the third
and Jacome made the lead stand up, allowing just one run and six
hits over seven innings. Jeff Sexton recorded the final four
outs without allowing a hit for his first save of the
postseason. Durham, competing in the IL for the first season
after an 18-year stay in the Single-A Carolina League, managed
just the one run on six hits after totaling 16 runs in the
previous two contests. Dave Eiland (1-2) took the loss, giving
up three runs -- two earned -- and seven hits over 6 1/3
innings, striking out six without issuing a walk. The Bisons
advance to the first-ever Triple-A World Series in Las Vegas,
Nevada, where they will play the Pacific Coast League champion,
either Calgary or New Orleans, beginning Monday night.
