I went through an update process this morning on institutional
holdings and activity during the past 3 months. Thought I would pass
it on for possible interest. The data in the table is obtained from
MarketGuide.

The totals and averages at the end of the table are rather
interesting. The average number of shares for each stock in the
group is 32,018,000. The average stock is held by 143 institutions
and the average percentage owned is 57 percent. While there was a
lot of buying and selling going on, the net result was a rather small
positive change in ownership for the institutions. The average
institutional holding for each stock increased by 67,000 shares over
the 3 month period. If it is assumed that this occurred equally each
trading day (13 weeks times 5 trading days per week = 65 days), this
is an average gain of 1030 shares per day - hardly a big number. On
the other hand, total shares purchased during the 3 month period was
257,185,000 - this is approximately 20 percent of the total
outstanding shares. Obviously, institutions like to trade!

Even though the percentage spread of net gain to net loss, 22 percent
to -31 percent, was very wide, it obviously did not have much, if
any, impact on overall share price. All the stocks went down as
shown on the previous post. Let's take one or two examples: CMOS
at the top of the table with a 22 percent net gain of institutional
shares - it is down 25 percent in the last 6 weeks. COHU close to
the bottom of the table with a 15 percent loss of institutional
shares - it is only down 16 percent in share price the last 6 weeks.
