AFCI provides universal platform for all transmission media. I don't see the technical difficulty there. To glue different receiver/transmitter into one box is not something hard to do or imitate. On the other hand, WDM has been around for quite sometime. I'm not sure how difficult is DWDM. At least CIEN has a technical lead over its competitors and makes them jealous.
